Write your response to "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God" by Jonathan Edwards. How is it similar or different to what you have been taught about God? What would you want to say to Jonathan Edwards about this sermon if you could talk to him?

When Jonathan Edwards wrote this sermon, he summed up the entire Puritan theme, religion, and mindset. Their view of God outside of salvation and pious living is a God of unmerciful wrath. To them, that is a non-Puritan. Edwards uses the analogy of sinners hanging like spiders over a fire, "unworthy of nothing else but to be cast into the fire." This, in an extreme way, is very true. Outside of the salvation of Christ, we are full of sin, meaning we are separated completely from God. And Sin + Separation from God = Hell and eternal damnation. So, Edwards sermon is right. After this, he goes on to say that there is hope. This is a great contrast to his whole sermon. Edwards gives a followup to the fire and brimstone of how we can be saved by the redemption of Jesus. Christ stands in an open door welcoming all who want salvation and the mercies of God, to fly out of Sodom. "Haste and escape for your lives, look not behind you, escape to the mountain, lest you be consumed." Genesis 19:17
I think that this sermon delivers a very powerful message. This is for the most part similer to what I have read about God. The Bible shows numerous times where God is shown as a God of mercy. However, there have been just as many instances where he has been shown to be a God of wrath. If I could talk to John Edwards, than I would ask him what inspired to him to write this sermon. His message is a harsh message but is a message that needs to be heard.
